Junaid Akbar, a leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has resigned from his role as Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday as directed by his party. He handed over his resignation to PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar by saying that the position was given to him by the party and that he was stepping down in accordance with the party instructions.
Junaid Akbar also expressed his respect for Imran Khan decision by mentioning that he would be willing to resign from his National Assembly seat if directed by PTI founder. This decision comes after Imran Khan himself had earlier asked Junaid Akbar to step down from the PAC chairmanship.
Junaid Akbar was elected as PAC Chairman on January 25, 2024. However the position had been vacant for almost a year before that due to ongoing disputes between PTI and the government over who should fill the role. Following the February 2024 elections, the PAC chairmanship had still not been filled.
An emergency PAC meeting was called after the PTI backed SIC proposed a list of candidates including Junaid Akbar and Adil Bazai for the position. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) proposed Junaid Akbar name and no one in the PAC objected.
