Imran Khan who is a Former Prime Minister of Pakistan has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his contributions to human rights and democracy. The nomination was put forward by the Pakistan World Alliance (PWA) which is a newly established advocacy group in collaboration with the Norwegian political party named Partiet Sentrum.
Partiet Sentrum stated announcing the news on social media platform X:
“We are pleased to announce on behalf of Partiet Sentrum that, in alliance with an eligible nominator, we have nominated Imran Khan for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his efforts for democracy and human rights in Pakistan.”
This is the second time Imran Khan has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. He was previously considered in 2019 for his role in promoting peace in South Asia.
The Nobel Peace Prize selection process is highly competitive with the Norwegian Nobel Committee reviewing hundreds of nominations each year. The final decision takes about eight months during which the nominees undergo a detailed assessment
Imran Khan is a key political figure in Pakistan. He is the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) which is the country’s leading opposition party. Imran Khan continues to advocate for democracy and political rights even after being removed from office and facing legal issues
Imran Khan has been in prison since August 2023 and in January 2024 was sentenced to 14 years in jail on corruption charges. This is his fourth major conviction. However he claims these cases are politically motivated and denies any wrongdoing.
Imran Khan’s Nobel Peace Prize nomination brings attention to the contrast between his legal troubles and his international recognition as a pro-democracy leader. His supporters believe that this nomination will shed light on the political nature of the cases against him.
