Punjab University (PU) has launched a major cleanup operation in partnership with the local police to remove illegal occupants from its hostels in Lahore. This move has already made room for 600 genuine students who need hostel accommodation.
According to PU’s spokesperson, hundreds of unauthorized individuals were living in the hostels and taking up space meant for enrolled students. So far around 300 morning students have been given proper hostel rooms and the university plans to accommodate 300 more.
The hostel offices are working even on weekends to speed up the allotment process. Officials found alcohol and illegal drugs like crystal meth in several rooms during the raid. The university claims certain student organizations were behind these unauthorized takeovers and were using the rooms for turning them into illegal rental spaces.
Many of these illegal residents were using high electricity appliances like inverter ACs, heaters and iron which added huge power costs to the university.
The university was also losing Rs. 20 million annually in unpaid hostel fees due to their unauthorized stay.
PU also reminded that it offers the most affordable student accommodation at just Rs. 2,000 per month and it remains committed to fair policies and a peaceful campus environment. Legal action is being taken against anyone causing trouble and all cases will be dealt with fairly.
