Bollywood icon Aamir Khan has announced that his latest film, ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’, will not be released on the usual streaming platforms. Instead, it will premiere directly on YouTube’s Movies-on-Demand starting August 1.
The film, which hit cinemas earlier this year on June 20, is being called a spiritual sequel to Aamir’s 2007 hit ‘Taare Zameen Par.’ Now, rather than waiting for Netflix or Amazon Prime, fans can rent the movie on YouTube for just ₹100 (around $1.15). The film is going to be up for rent in 38 countries — that includes the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, Singapore, and a bunch of others.
When asked why he didn’t go for the usual theatrical route, Aamir said, “Honestly, barely 2 or 3% of people in India actually make it to the cinema. That number really stuck with me. I kept thinking — what about the rest? How do we reach them?”
That really made me think — how do we connect with the remaining 97% who never get that experience? That’s what pushed me to try a different path this time.”
“I’ve always wanted my films to reach more people,” Aamir said. “This time, YouTube felt like the right platform. It’s simple, and the pay-per-view option gives people flexibility.”
So basically, once you pay a small fee, you’ll be able to watch the film whenever you want — no strings attached.
Aamir also kicked off a new YouTube channel where he plans to post behind-the-scenes bits, share his take on filmmaking, and talk about what really goes into making a movie from the ground up.
Interestingly, some movie lovers have pointed out that Sitaare Zameen Par feels a bit similar to the 2023 Hollywood film Champions, the one starring Woody Harrelson.
A few scenes even feel similar, according to fans.
Still, Aamir choosing to skip the usual platforms and head straight to YouTube? That’s a pretty unexpected move — and it might just shake things up for how Bollywood reaches viewers around the world.
