On 12 February 2025, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif talked about the main discussions between Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund after they received a favorable response about Pakistan’s proposal regarding the cut in production costs, including energy tariffs. While addressing a federal cabinet meeting, he said Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the IMF, said they would be open to considering Pakistan’s plan for lowering electricity tariffs, provided the government submits it on a document.
PM Shehbaz Sharif said that it was needed to reduce production costs for industrial growth and overall economic development in Pakistan. Negotiations with the IMF were based on the premise that any reduction in duties and tariffs would directly lead to growth in the economy of Pakistan. The IMF felt positive about the issue of Pakistan first formally approaching them to submit a draft proposal. So the Prime Minister directed the Deputy Prime Minister to formally reach out to the IMF along with the rest of the Government. In this regard, he talked to the provincial officials.
The Prime Minister told Georgieva in his recent meeting on the sidelines of the World Government Summit 2025 that Pakistan had implemented economic reforms successfully and had also received appreciation from the IMF for the government’s commitment. The Prime Minister also informed her that the multinational logistics company DP World was also willing to expand within Pakistan, which he considered an encouraging start to investor confidence in Pakistan’s economic potential.
With positive signs, a detailed proposal formed by the IMF allows the Pakistan economic prospect to get on the road to recovery and growth.
