Pakistan has called upon the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take action on execution of its adopted resolution of solution for Jammu & Kashmir conflict.

On Monday, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi speaking at top-level meeting at United Nations Security council said, “  it was the council’s responsibility to ensure the right to self-determination “for the Kashmiri people, and promote a just and lasting settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute by taking measures to implement its own resolutions”.

A press release by the Pakistan Mission to the United States stressed that the resolutions of the Security Council guaranteed people of Kashmir their right to self determination through United Nations monitored voting but it is still unsettled.

Fatemi pointed out that UN peacekeeping operations are a cost-effective way to maintain global peace and security. He mentioned that the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan, set up in 1949, is a good example of missions that monitor and observe conflicts between countries.

He also highlighted that Pakistan is one of the top peace-keeping force contributors and a founding member of the UN peacekeeping commission.

Fatemi pointed out that Pakistan has sent 235,000 peacekeepers to 48 missions worldwide, with 181 Pakistani peacekeepers sacrificing their lives for global peace and security.

He added that over 3,267 Pakistani men and women are currently serving in seven UN missions, proudly wearing blue helmets.

SPAM also gave following suggestions to improve UN peacekeeping mission:

    SuggestionExplanation
Stronger commitment from UN membersThe UN and Security Council should stay committed to preventing harmful groups from taking advantage of unstable situations.
Clear and realistic goalsPeacekeeping missions should have well-defined and practical objectives based on each situation.
Focus on political solutionsPeacekeeping should support long-term political strategies for resolving conflicts.
Adequate fundingPeace operations need enough money to meet their growing demands.
Better training & equipmentPeacekeepers should have modern training, tools, and resources to handle new threats.
Well-planned mission exitsMissions should end in an organized way to ensure continued stability and protect civilians.
Early peacebuilding effortsSteps should be taken early to promote long-term peace in conflict areas.
Consultation with troop-contributing countriesCountries that provide troops should be involved in planning and decision-making.
