The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has predicted that the moon for the Islamic month of Zilhaj 1446 is likely to be sighted on May 28. Eid ul Adha is expected to fall on Friday June 7, 2025 across the country based on this forecast. In its statement, SUPARCO explained that the new moon will be born on May 27 at 8:02 AM. However by the time the sun sets on May 27, the moon will be only 11 hours and 34 minutes old and there will be just a 37 minute window between sunset and moonset. This makes the moon sighting highly unlikely on that day.
According to SUPARCO astronomical data and modern calculations, the crescent moon is expected to be visible on the evening of May 28. Therefore the first of Zilhaj will likely be observed on May 29. The commission also noted that moon visibility depends on several important factors such as the age of the moon, its angle from the sun, its position in the sky at sunset and weather conditions. SUPARCO has concluded that Eid ul Adha will most likely be celebrated in Pakistan on June 7.
