Will Iran Participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

In one of the biggest developments that have rocked the world of football, the Sports Minister of Iran has asserted that the nation is unlikely to be a part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

This announcement is made at a time when geopolitical tensions are at a high and regional conflict is severe after recent US and Israeli airstrikes. Officials contend that it is impossible to send the national football team to the United States because of the current state of security.

The 2026 world cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Ironically, it was Iran that became the first team to be officially qualified to the tournament and their group-stage matches will be held in Los Angeles and Seattle.

Position of Sports Minister: Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali said that there is no economic sense in participating in the tournament at the moment. He pointed out that the security of Iranian athletes and officials and the traveling fans cannot be assured by the government on US soil after the alleged murder of the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei by US bombs.

Doubts of the Federation of Football: The president of the Iranian Federation of Football Mehdi Taj repeated these somber sentiments, asking who would dare to take a national sporting team into a host country in such unstable conditions.

These remarks come after a fast track in the Gulf region following the airstrikes carried out almost two weeks ago, which resulted in the conflict being extended to the region.

Recently FIFA President Gianni Infantino has commented on the issue when he said that the president had personally talked with the president of the US Donald Trump and the escalating situation in Iran.

According to Infantino, president Trump stated that of course the Iranian national team can play in the United States.

Infantino repeated this warm comment by stating that he had always believed that the World Cup could be a powerful international event to bring people together even in the time of the most extreme political conflicts.
