The Punjab government is getting ready to start a new project called the Punjab E-Taxi Scheme. Through this, unemployed young people will have a chance to own electric taxis without paying any interest. The main goal is to reduce pollution and help people earn a living at the same time.

Recently, Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan sat down with his team to discuss the important details of this plan — like how the vehicles will work, what they’ll cost, and what kind of infrastructure will be needed.

The meeting covered everything from vehicle specs and prices to infrastructure needs.

In the first phase, 1,100 electric taxis will be distributed through interest-free monthly installment plans. These plans are designed to help eligible individuals own and operate their own electric taxis without the stress of added costs or interest rates.

The scheme falls under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s larger E-Taxi Program 2025, which is focused on replacing fuel-powered taxis with fully electric ones. The goal is to reduce air pollution and modernize public transport.

The vehicles will be supplied through a partnership with Dewan Motors. Two models are expected to be available:

    • Honri VC20: Range of up to 200 km per charge
    • Honri VC30: Range of up to 300 km per charge

All the taxis under this scheme will run entirely on electricity, meaning they won’t produce any smoke or harmful emissions — a big step toward cleaner air across Punjab.

To support this, the government is building a strong charging network. In Lahore, charging stations will be placed every 3 kilometres, with plans to expand the setup across the entire province.

Along with promoting clean transport, the scheme is likely to generate a large number of jobs. The focus is on giving better chances to young men and women who are looking for work. Officials say applying won’t be difficult — the process will be kept straightforward so that people from villages, women, and even those with disabilities can take part without facing unnecessary hurdles.

Minister Bilal Akbar Khan confirmed that official advertisements will be rolled out soon, sharing full details on how to apply.

With over 60,000 applications already received, this scheme is set to revolutionize public transport in Punjab. It offers a cleaner, quieter, and more affordable solution to conventional taxis — and could become a model for green transport across Pakistan.
