LAHORE – After the successful launch of electric buses in Punjab, Lahore is now preparing to introduce an electric tram service to make travel easier for citizens.

According to details, the tram will run between Harbanspura and Thokar Niaz Baig as part of a new urban transport plan. Authorities are also working on making Canal Road smoother for traffic by turning its underpasses into single-lane passages. On Jail Road, the existing underpass will be shifted from the left side to the right side of the road for better flow.

The tram line will be laid on the extreme left side of Canal Road so regular traffic is not disturbed. Near bus stops, the road will be widened to make space for passengers. The Transport Department is still reviewing the plan to make sure the route is practical and efficient.

Officials are also considering building an underground road from Jallo to Harbanspura to improve city connectivity.

The first electric tram, imported from China, has already reached Lahore. It has three connected coaches and runs entirely on electricity. A short 10-minute charge is enough for the tram to cover nearly 25 to 27 kilometres, carrying around 250 people at a time.

It operates much like an underground metro, except it runs directly on the city’s roads.

A test run is already happening near Lahore Airport to check its performance.

A Public Relations Officer confirmed that the tram was assembled at the Ali Town Depot and will begin as a pilot project. During the trial period, passengers can ride for free. If the trial goes well, tickets will be introduced for regular service.
