Once again, the United Arab Emirates showed its plans to make it a global center of artificial intelligence (AI) as President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan invited OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to visit Qasr Al Shati in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. The senior-level engagement mentioned the desire of the UAE to accelerate AI-related studies, establish relationships based on innovation, and increase cooperation between OpenAI and institutions located in the UAE.
In the negotiations, Sheikh Mohamed and Altman were talking about possibilities to promote AI research and increase its implementation in the spheres of both the state and the business world. The dialogues also indicated the UAE strategic plan to create a powerful, sophisticated AI ecosystem that can further economic development in a sustainable manner, cultivate worldwide talent, and mold the future of technology.
Sam Altman applauded AI policies in UAE being progressive, global partnerships, and their active participation in the global AI agenda. Altman became the first recipient of the first-ever honorary doctorate of the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), the first graduate-level research university in the entire world that is focused solely on artificial intelligence (AI). The honorary degree recognized the innovative contributions of Altman to the development of artificial intelligence, innovation and international talent development.
Artificial Intelligence in UAE
The UAE has led the development of AI in the world over the last ten years with the heavy investment in research, infrastructure, and international collaboration. The strategy of the country focuses on:
- The creation of AI in-house with training, research and business.
- Enhancing the role of the government and businesses in collaborating to promote innovation and commercial implementation of AI solutions.
- Establishing international collaborations with the most prominent AI organizations to acquire access to advanced technologies.
- These initiatives are part of the larger economic diversification agenda of the UAE, which seeks to turn the country into a knowledge-based economy, outside of its dependence on oil.
Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure and Arabic Language Preservation
The UAE has another AI data center, one of the largest in the world, which is to be used in high-performance computing and large-scale research. Besides technological infrastructure, the country is also in the lead to uphold and upgrade Arabic language using AI-based programming. These projects involve designing digital dictionaries, linguistic and readability platforms and Arabic language models with regional and cultural applications. These programs would not only increase the online presence of Arabic, but also preserve its cultural legacy to the generations to come.
Improving Global AI Cooperation
The UAE is still broadening its international collaborations in AI especially with the United States. In May, the historic deal was made to create one of the biggest AI stations outside the US, which will be used to facilitate collaborative study, education, and invention endeavors. This alliance also cements the position of the UAE as a global AI innovation and cooperation hub.
Looking Ahead
The move to host Sam Altman and award him an inaugural doctorate demonstrates the UAE has become a major participant in the global AI ecosystem. The three components of strategic investments, policy frameworks and international alliances are making the country define the future, where AI is one pillar of economic diversification, innovation and culture.
The contact with the OpenAI chief is the indicator of the further intentions of the UAE to become a leader in the field of artificial intelligence not only in the region but in the world offering the responsible and effective utilization of the innovative technologies.
