According to Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat, the government has decided to give a significant extension to the laptop distribution program and confirmed that 10,000 laptops will be given to students in the province learning in the private educational institutions. The announcement is included in a larger framework of education reforms of which the Punjab government intends to carry out over the course of 2026 that the minister termed as a transformational year of the education sector.
Rana Sikandar Hayat, who was addressing the performance and future outlook of the Punjab Education Department, told a press conference that the government has made serious measures to enhance access, quality, and transparency in education. Moreover, he pointed out that the elimination of almost 2 million ghost enrollments off the government records was one of the most important accomplishments of the past year, as the government’s action is expected to guarantee that the resources of the population go to the actual students.
On the age-old challenge of teacher shortages, the minister said that the department was able to rationalize about 26000 teachers so that distribution of the teaching staff per school was better. This, he explained, has assisted in increasing the level of efficiency in the classroom and decreasing the overcrowding of institutions.
Rana Sikandar Hayat also identified historic reforms of the syllabus and significant reforms in the examination system. He says that, in Punjab, examination boards have been displaced towards e-marking systems, which is to enhance transparency, in addition to minimizing human error and increasing the speed of which results are processed.
Another important area was Early Childhood Education (ECE). The minister disclosed that almost 10,000 schools have been furnished with ECE rooms and over a million students are currently getting meals daily within the school nutrition program to enhance attendance and learning results.
The Punjab government also improved 268 schools, dealt with 37 cases of harassment on teachers and 450 colleges were made by appointing principals on merit. He also verified that the appointment of vice chancellors in 29 state owned universities was done.
The minister promised to enhance digital learning, equal opportunity and academic excellence among all classes in society by extending the laptop scheme to students in the private sector. He noted that these plans show the long-term educational development and improved governance of Punjab.
