We are often great at breaking promises to ourselves, but we hate breaking promises to others. This is human nature. We value social consistency. That is why an accountability partner is one of the most effective tools for productivity.
An accountability partner is simply someone with whom you share your goals and report your progress. It could be a colleague, a friend, or a mentor. Knowing that someone is going to ask, “Did you finish that chapter?” or “Did you go to the gym?” creates a powerful external pressure to perform.
The American Society of Training and Development found that you have a 65% chance of completing a goal if you commit to someone. That chance rises to 95% if you have a specific accountability appointment with them.
To make this work, set up a regular check-in. It could be a 15-minute call every Friday morning. During the call, state what you accomplished last week and exactly what you intend to do next week. Be specific.
Choose the right partner. You don’t want a cheerleader who says “it’s okay” when you slack off. You want someone who is firm and committed to their own growth as well. By outsourcing your discipline to a partner, you ensure that you show up, even on the days you don’t feel like it.
