The first university course on Food Law has been introduced in Pakistan and it is a major step by Pakistan to enhance food governance, sustainability and awareness to the population. The new course will commence in February 2026 in Kinnaird College of Women, Lahore, in the Nadira Hassan Law Department.

The objective of the programme is to make the students realize that food is no mere thing we eat, but a system that is interrelated with law, politics, environment, and society.

Developed With Experts in Food and Environment

Environmental and Animal Rights Consultants Pakistan (EARC Pakistan) and Rizq, a renowned organization that focuses on food security, sustainable farming and climate protection have co-created the course with Rizq.

They both worked on developing the course which describes the functioning of food systems in developing nations such as Pakistan.

Because of this collaboration, this is a big step for Pakistan toward educating students about food safety, policy, and sustainability.

Understanding Food Through Law and Policy

The course is not just a study of nutrition, but it is also a legal and social system of food. Students will get to know how laws regarding food are formulated, who regulates markets, and how the government influences what people grow or consume.

The curriculum is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of law, the environment, ethics, and policy to demonstrate how food systems are governed and confronted. Through this approach, this is a big step for Pakistan in preparing future experts who can improve national food policies.

Addressing Food Insecurity and Climate Issues

Pakistan is facing serious problems like food shortages, climate change, environmental damage, and public health risks. The new course looks at the old colonial laws of South Asia and how they still shape today’s food and agriculture systems.

It also covers food safety, public health enforcement, environmental protection, climate impact, and animal welfare. By studying these areas, this is a big step for Pakistan in building a safer and fairer food system.

Who Can Join Course on Food Law

Students of law, researchers, policy workers and development professionals interested in working in the field of food governance and public interest are the target audience of the programme. The course will also produce thinkers capable of securing the right to food and food sustainability by bridging the gap between the learning process in the classroom and real-life issues. On the whole, it is a giant leap towards Pakistan in developing a new generation who would be able to address food system problems.
