The Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif has officially introduced the Roshan Pankha Program, which is a large-scale energy-saving plan that has been launched to replace 10 million of old and inefficient fans in the country. The government estimates that the replacement of such fans with the modern and energy saving fans will assist the consumers to save up to Rs. 12,000 per fan per annum in their electricity bills.

Roshan Pankha Program Details and Timeline

Key officials who were present during the launch ceremony were the Energy Minister, Sardar Awais Leghari, and Climate Change Minister, Dr. Musadik Malik. Dr. Malik says that the program will offer a short-term solution to the low-income families that are unable to afford high utility bills.

Implementation: The distribution and replacement process would start in next 90 days.

Mechanism: The consumers can be able to get rid of their old energy consuming fans or sell them and purchase new energy saving ones.

Purpose: To decrease the national energy load and facilitate the economic activity by reducing the operational costs of businesses and households.

    Long-Term Energy Reforms

This initiative is among the overall structural reforms which Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Leghari emphasized on. He observed that national electricity demand has reached a level of approximately 8,000 MW because of the fast process of solarization. According to Leghari, electricity charges are already cut down by 20 percent on the whole, and the tariffs charged to industries have been lowered to 11.5 cents per unit.

By 2034, the government would like to realize 90 percent of clean energy production. According to Leghari, the Roshan Pankha project would lessen the burden on the national grid, such that over the next 25 to 30 years, there would be no need to open new power plants, and these would help solve the problem of capacity payments.
