FAQS
How are the timings different in Hyderabad and other Sindh cities (such as Karachi or Sukkur)?
Geographically Hyderabad is situated between Karachi and Sukkur. As such, the sun sets in Hyderabad a couple of minutes before Karachi and a couple of minutes after Sukkur. This is what causes the usual difference between the Sehri and Iftar between these cities to be on average 3 to 6 minutes. Always watch the calendar of your local city.
Is this calendar correct in the surrounding regions of Hyderabad (such as Jamshoro or Kotri)?
Jamshoro, Kotri, Latifabad and Qasimabad are some of the areas that border Hyderabad directly. This calendar can be relied upon by the residents of these areas. But slightly further areas (say, Matiari or Tando Muhammad Khan) may have a slight difference of 1 to 2 minutes.
Which one to observe the Azaan or the calendar Sehri and Iftar?
The commencement and the conclusion of the fast are not necessarily based on the sound of the Azaan, but rather on the occurrence of the sun (Subh-e-Sadiq) setting and rising. In some cases, the Azaan can be postponed in the mosques. So you need to cease eating and drinking when the time on this calendar runs out and you need to break your fast precisely when the time of Iftar enters.
Do the Sehri and the Iftar time differ between the sects (Sunni and Shia)?
The above calendar is anchored on the principles of Qanu Fiqh Hanafi (Sunni). People who follow Fiqh Jafaria (Shia) usually observe the end of the Sehri time a few minutes before the given time and generally observe the breaking of fast approximately 10 to 12 minutes before the set Iftar time (at which time the redness is totally removed on the sky).
