Good news to young lovers of science! Students of Pakistani schools who are interested in biology and biotechnology now have an enormous chance to demonstrate their talent on the international level. Plans and registration have started to hold the Open International Biology Olympiad (OIBO) 2026, which is to be held May 15-22, 2026, at the Sirius Educational Center of the Sirius Federal Territory.
The registration and the selection is very competitive as it is not only that every country is given an opportunity to send one national team but also because it has to be organized with the national educational bodies.
In case you are asking yourself how to get on board and play on behalf of Pakistan then here is all you need to know about the requirements to qualify, form a team and the registration process.
International Biology Olympiad 2026 Eligibility Criteria
This is to make sure that prior to the registration or preparation process, students and schools ensure that they fulfill the high-rigid eligibility criteria established by the organizers of the Olympiad:
Age Requirement: Students who will participate are to be aged between 14 and 18 years.
Team Size: The Pakistani national team can comprise two to six student members.
Team Leadership: There should be a team leader (18 years and above) with the delegation.
Observers: Two official observers (at least 18 years old) are allowed to accompany the delegation to exchange professional experience, but they will be charged an additional organizational fee of 70,000 Russian rubles.
Method to Register for International Biology Olympiad 2026
Individual students are not able to enroll directly as there can only be one official team of Pakistan to Sirius Educational Center. Rather, they have to undergo a national selection process.
Make arrangements with the Education Boards.
Schools should be notified at once by talented biology students. To start the process of selecting the national team of Pakistan, schools should arrange with the regional education boards and national science societies to start the process.
Take part in National Selection Camps.
In order to identify the most successful candidates, educational organizations and science societies usually conduct national training camps or mock Olympiads. Students have to compete in and pass such national level theoretical and laboratory rounds to be chosen into the final official delegation.
Prepare the actual Representative Delegation.
After shortlisting the top two to six students, the national science body or education board will then formally sign the team with the OIBO organizers and allocate the team a team leader who will be of age 18 years or above.
Secure Travel Sponsorships
The sending country will have to cover the travel cost whereas the host organization in Russia will fully cover accommodation and food during the event. To cover the cost of travelling, it is recommended that schools and the students of choice solicit the assistance of universities, biotech companies and NGOs to cover the cost of their travelling.
What to Expect at the OIBO 2026?
As soon as it is registered and selected, the Pakistani team will go through a strict three-part competition (in English or Russian):
Theoretical Round (Individual): Testing basic biological principles and problem-solving.
Practical Round (Individual): Tests of practical laboratory skills and techniques.
Project Round (Team-Based): Working together as a group to address a big biological or biotechnological problem.
To promote a sense of complete fairness, the participants will be mandated to submit their personal electronic devices to their team leaders a day before the first round.
Who is eligible to participate in the International Biology Olympiad 2026?
Pakistani school students aged 14 to 18 who excel in biology and biotechnology are eligible to participate as part of the official national team.
How many teams can Pakistan send to the OIBO 2026?
Like most participating nations, Pakistan is allowed to send only one national team, consisting of two to six students and one team leader.
Are travel expenses covered by the Olympiad organizers?
No. The host organizers will cover accommodation and meals at the Sirius Educational Center, but travel costs must be covered by the sending institution, the students, or through local sponsorships.
