Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a very serious public warning to all the mobile phone users nationwide on the legitimacy of their connection to their cellular services. To improve the network security and to avoid abuse of telecom services, the PTA has clearly made it clear to the citizens by warning them to upgrade their registration information or risk their SIM being blocked and even disruption of services.

    The CNIC Validity Requirement

As per the official announcement made by the regulatory authority, all mobile users are required to make sure that their active SIM cards are registered to a valid and updated Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC). It has become clear that any SIM cards linked to any expired or formally canceled CNICs are highly likely to be permanently blocked by the PTA. Inability to renew an expired CNIC and replace corresponding telecom records will lead to the immediate loss of mobile services, which will have a considerable impact on everyday communication and connectivity.

Action Against SIMs of Deceased Individuals

Besides the lapsed identity cards, the PTA has also given a stern warning on mobile connections using names of deceased people. Using a SIM card that belongs to an individual who died is against telecom rules and can attract tough legal measures against the present user. It is highly recommended that citizens who use such SIMs should immediately transfer the ownership of such to a valid and living user with CNIC to prevent legal problems and suspension of services.

    NADRA Verification and System Integrity

In order to streamline this important update procedure, the PTA has instructed all mobile users to ensure that their personal information and the status of their activated SIMs are updated with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). This is a crucial measure in ensuring the overall integrity of the Pakistani telecommunication system because it ensures that the records that are created by the telecom operators are exactly the same with those that are in the official database maintained by NADRA. The main purpose of this comprehensive verification is to avoid identity theft, fraud and illegal use of mobile networks to commit crimes.

    A Commitment to Secure Telecommunications

According to the PTA, these strict actions were an essential component of the current work of the government to create and support a completely secure, transparent and trustful telecommunications environment. The authority strongly advises all users to act swiftly and proactively in updating their CNIC information so as not to be caught off-guard by any service disruptions. The PTA restated its ultimate goal to have a secure and reliable telecom network to all citizens in the country.
