In May 2026, a report appeared from the luxury cruise ship MV Hondius, which was sailing the Atlantic, of a Hantavirus outbreak. The news has given a big reason to worry to the world community, especially to the Pakistanis living abroad and frequent travelers. As rumors spread on social media about the “next pandemic,” it is important to distinguish fact from fiction.
What is Hantavirus and How Does it Spread?
Hantavirus is not a “new” virus. It is a family of viruses primarily spread by rodents (rats and mice). The human infection usually occurs together with breathing in dust that has been contaminated by the urine, droppings, or saliva of infected rodents, which is known as “aerosolization.
The particular strain found in the recent cruise ship outbreak, however, is believed to be the Andes virus. The Andes virus is unique in that in certain instances it can be transmitted from person to person when individuals are in close proximity or for a prolonged time, unlike other strains of Hantavirus found in North America. This is a particular one that led to the increased international alert.
The MV Hondius Outbreak: What We Know So Far
The outbreak started when the ship left Argentina. So far, 8 cases are confirmed or suspected with 3 deaths. There are strict quarantine measures in place with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other global health authorities, due to the ship’s international passengers.
The Pakistani government, through the Border Health Services, has issued travel advisories for those returning from areas in South America to keep a close watch on their health, and to neutralize viruses in the country in its initial stages through early detection.
Is Hantavirus the Next COVID-19?
While Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is serious (35% to 40% mortality rate), it does not seem to have the potential to spread globally like COVID-19, medical experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) note.
Transmission efficiency: It is not readily transmitted by casual contact or air over large distances.
Host Dependency: The virus is heavily dependent on the host populations of the rodents for the outbreak.
Guidelines for Overseas Pakistanis and Travelers
When traveling out of town or on a cruise:
Avoid Rodent Infested Areas: Rooms for storage or cottages that are infested with rodents should be avoided.
Symptoms: High fever, severe muscle pain, tiredness and sudden difficulty in breathing.
