GEPCO Privatization 2026: Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani Investors Line Up to Buy Gujranwala Electric

Pakistan’s power sector is in for a major shake-up. At least eleven serious buyers from three countries have now emerged in the GEPCO privatization process, and all want a controlling stake in the Gujranwala Electric Power Company. The news presents a simple question to the common consumers in Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot and nearby areas: is private ownership the ultimate remedy to load shedding and billing problems?

Who wants to buy GEPCO ?

Expressions of interest closed on Friday, with bidders indicating their interest in acquiring between 51 and 100 percent of the shareholding and full management control, the Privatisation Commission said. The list has three Turkish energy companies, Saudi Arabia’s Al Sharif Contracting and Commercial Development Company and well-known Pakistani names, including Engro Energy, Hub Power Holdings, Lucky Cement, K-Electric, and a consortium of AKD Securities, Fast Cable and Mughal Steel Group.

    Why foreign investor interest counts

“The strong turnout is a sign of growing investor confidence in Pakistan’s distribution sector,” said Muhammad Ali, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Privatization. The interest shown by Gulf and Turkish investors is an indication that Pakistan’s energy reforms are being taken seriously abroad, especially for a country that often suffers from limited foreign inflows.

What happens next with the sale process?

What’s next? The submitted paperwork will now go through a screening stage. Successful investors will be provided with a Virtual Data Room for due diligence prior to going to final bidding.

Quick Checklist: What GEPCO Consumers Should Watch Out For

•Official announcements are to be made through the Privatisation Commission website.

•Once a buyer has been finalized, check billing and complaint channels for any changes.

•Compare this deal with the timelines of the ongoing FESCO and IESCO privatization process.

•Many households in the region depend on mobile updates rather than bank visits or in-person offices so be on the lookout for tariff or service updates via GEPCO’s official app or SMS alerts.

    The context of Pakistan:

GEPCO is one of three power distribution companies in the government’s first batch of privatization, along with FESCO and IESCO. FESCO has already received 12 EOIs by early August and IESCO bidding closes on September 7, 2026. A separate holding entity of Rs 250 billion is also planned to manage the sale of these firms.

    Conclusion

GEPCO’s privatization pushes signals that Pakistan’s power sector is opening up to serious regional and international capital and if managed transparently, it could mean fewer outages and better service for millions of consumers in central Punjab.
