Punjab’s low-income housing plan, known as Apni Chhat Apna Ghar, is entering a new phase with big developments. A new agreement (MoU) has been signed between the Bank of Punjab and the Punjab Housing Department to make the loan process easier for poor and low-income families.
This deal means that the Bank of Punjab will now fully handle the home loan financing under the programme for the year 2025–26.
The event was attended by Punjab’s Housing Minister Bilal Yasin, Bank of Punjab President Zafar Masud, PHATA’s Director General Sikandar Zeeshan, and several senior officials.
During the ceremony, Minister Bilal Yasin mentioned that over Rs60 billion in loans has already been disbursed to more than 52,000 families across the province. Every month, about Rs900 million is recovered through easy instalments. He added that next month, another Rs10 billion will be given out to more eligible applicants.
Housing Secretary Noor-ul-Amin Mengal also spoke at the event. He added that applying for a loan has now been made much simpler so more families can benefit.
The Apni Chhat Apna Ghar programme is one of many welfare projects started by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
So far, this housing scheme has helped over 51,900 families own their homes. Rs65 billion has already been distributed, and more than 45,000 homes are currently being built.
The programme works through three main ways:
- Building houses on government land
- Providing cheap homes in private housing schemes
- Giving interest-free loans to families who already own small plots
The plan is to build 100,000 homes over the next four and a half years. It’s also expected to create half a million jobs. For many low-income families in Punjab, this means not just a place to live, but a real chance at a better life.
This housing programme is more than just bricks and cement — it’s helping people build stability, confidence, and a future they can count on.
