The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially appointed former all rounder Azhar Mahmood as the acting head coach of the national red-ball team.
This decision comes after the ongoing struggle of PCB to find a successful coaching setup. The board tried out six different head coaches over the past two years but none were able to bring consistent success in major international competitions. In April, the PCB once again advertised the position to bring new leadership to the team.

Aaqib Javed had served as the interim head coach for both white-ball and red-ball formats before Azhar appointment. He had also been working as a selector during this period. However following Pakistan performance in the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year, he stepped down from the role.
A statement issued by the PCB confirmed Azhar Mahmood’s new role that he will serve as acting head coach until his current contract ends.
The PCB stated about Azhar that his strong understanding of the game and valuable experience in international cricket and county cricket make him a strong fit for the position.
The PCB showed confidence that his presence will bring more discipline, strength and success to the Pakistan red-ball squad.
This is not the first time for Azhar in a coaching role with the national side. He also served as head coach during Pakistan’s T20I series against New Zealand in April last year.
