Pakistan captain Babar Azam has become the first captain in the history of Men T20 International cricket to be the highest run scorer overtaking Rohit Sharma of India.
Babar scored his 10th thousand match in his very second appearance in T20Is after a long break, as Pakistan defeated South Africa by nine wickets in a comfortable victory at home on Friday.
Prior to the match, Babar had to score nine more runs to surpass Rohit Sharma who had scored 4,231 runs in 151 innings. Babar did it in style with 11 not out on 18 balls in his 123rd innings demonstrating once again his consistency and style of play.
Pakistan pursued the target of South Africa (110) with a lot of ease tying the three match series at 1-1.
This is another accomplishment towards the brilliant T20 career of Babar. He has now become the leader of the run charts as he has over 4,231 runs and he has also made 36 half-centuries, a mark that makes him domineering in the format.
Since Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli (ranked third with 4,188 runs on the list) have retired in T20 internationals, Babar has no competition of real worth in the active players except Jos Buttler of England, who currently has 3,869 runs.
Being a stylish and poised batter and a composed leader, Babar Azam still has millions of followers worldwide. This has enabled him to be one of the modern greats of cricket due to his consistency in all forms.
He will get another opportunity to add to his record when the Pakistani team takes up the series-deciding match against South Africa today, on November 1.
The new success by Babar again justifies the reason why he is regarded as the pillar of the batting line of Pakistan and one of the finest T20 hitters in the globe.
