The Wheat Policy 2025-26 has been accepted by the federal government and the price of the wheat procuring has been fixed to Rs. 3,500 per 40 kilograms. The aim is to give just income to farmers and to maintain the prices of wheat at the same level as in the international markets and food security within the country.

The final decision was made by the meeting conducted by the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Sunday. In the new policy, the trade and movement of wheat within and between provinces will be unhindered, which will enable the supply to flow across the Pakistani borders easily.

Implementation will be done by a national committee, led by the Federal Minister of the National food security. It will accommodate the representatives of all provinces and will have weekly meetings and report straight to the prime minister.

The move comes as Pakistan is under pressure to increase the price of Agriculture products especially Sindh where Agriculture Minister Muhammad Bux Khan Mahar has insisted on an increase in support price to 4200 per 40kg. He cautioned that with such low prices they will see the farmers move to other more lucrative crops which will eventually result in food shortage.

The Sindh government has already introduced a Rs. 56 billion Wheat Cultivation Support Programme to assist the growers. Fertilizer subsidies will be given to 411, 000 small and medium farmers of 24,700 each. To date there are over 132,000 registered farmers.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif promised that the new policy was developed after consulting provincial governments, farmer associations and industry professionals. He indicated that the government is still determined to resolve issues affecting the agriculture sector and that farmers in Pakistan will keep on prospering.
