The Imaan Mazari arrest has drawn strong reactions after an anti-terrorism court sent activist lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir and her husband Hadi Ali Chattha to jail on judicial remand following their detention near the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
Imaan Mazari and Husband Taken into Judicial Custody
The case is connected with a protest in front of the IHC when the couple is charged with the display and even wrongful behaviour with the president of Islamabad High Court Bar Association. Owing to the security reasons the hearing was held with the excessive police presence and without media or lawyers in the courtroom. The couple also spent three nights in the IHCBA office in fear of arrest, prior to the arrest. They were also facing another case over controversial social media posts, in which their bail had already been cancelled.
Protest Outside IHC Leads to Lawyers’ Strike and Public Backlash
Mazari and Chattha tried to surrender before the IHC chief justice but later left for district courts in a bar association vehicle. Near Serena Hotel underpass, police intercepted the vehicle and arrested them. Lawyers allege police used force and manhandled Mazari. The detention sparked protests by lawyers and condemnation from Shireen Mazari, Imaan’s mother, who called the arrest unfair and politically motivated.
