Espionage thrillers, particularly those that involve a cross-border tension have always fascinated Bollywood. Everything, whether it is high-octane action or real-world political drama, the genre provides an ultimate India Pakistan spy movies list. It is either a real Indian spy movie in Pakistan or it is an all-out fictitious blockbuster but it always makes it to the top of the box office. It is time to explore some of the best Bollywood spy films of Pakistan origin, their storyline, authenticity, and how they were received by the masses.

    What is Dhurandhar Movie About?

Dhurandhar is among the recent entries into the world of Indian spy films with its high stakes. The movie is based on a top secret RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) operation within Pakistani land. The story revolves around an elite undercover agent who is chosen to make an investigation and eliminate a menacing syndicate that threatens the security of the region. The film has a combination of serious psychological battles and rough, and hand-to-hand battles, leaving the excessive action behind to bring out a more down-to-earth cat and mouse adventure. One of the primary areas of the story is the mysterious antagonist, Jamal Jamali, who has connections that span the border in an effort to force the protagonist to overcome the web of lies, spies and continual threats in an attempt to accomplish the mission.

Top Indian Spy Movies Based on Pakistan

Here is the list of the top 10 spy thrillers that have defined this genre:

    1. Dhurandhar

Dhurandhar is a novel and rough take on the cross-border spy genre. The film narrates the story of a highly experienced yet a tired RAW agent who is on a secret mission to destroy a complex terror group that is under the radar. Its main conflict is his quest against Jamal Jamali who is a genius and is cruel who has vast networks making him almost invulnerable. Being a loner without any official governmental support, the main character has to use his intelligence and local informants and mere survival instincts. The movie is widely acclaimed due to its high tempo, the fact that it accurately portrays the spy tradecraft, and the ethical gray grounds that agents have to contend with in the business. It is the perfect combination of action and serious psychological tension.

    2. Raazi

In the search for a true Indian spy film in Pakistan, Raazi takes the first position. It is a novel adaptation of a novel by Harinder Sikka called Calling Sehmat directed by Meghna Gulzar. The movie features Alia Bhatt as Sehmat, a young woman of Kashmir origin who is married off to a senior Pakistani military family just before the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Sehmat is not a trained assassin but a normal girl who gets into a world of murder and sends very important information to India. Raazi has gained widespread praise over its poignant nature, having shed off hyper-nationalism in an attempt to demonstrate the severe cost of being an espionage on the individual. It is still amongst the most successful critical movies in this genre.

    3. Ek Tha Tiger

Ek Tha Tiger is the movie that jumpstarted the contemporary spy world of Bollywood. The movie, which stars Salman Khan as Tiger, an elite RAW agent, takes a different twist when he is tasked to go on a mission in Dublin to monitor an Indian scientist suspected of relaying secrets to Pakistan. It is there that he encounters and falls in love with Zoya (Katrina Kaif) who is then shown to be an undercover agent of the ISI of Pakistan. The film moves past a typical espionage mission and turns into an exciting, romantic adventure of worldwide proportions as both of the agents go against their agencies in order to be together. It is a grand blockbuster that is well blended with action, romance and cross border intrigue.

    4. Tiger Zinda Hai

The sequel of the blockbuster Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, changes the main location to the Middle East, retaining the Indo-Pak spy relationship. When a merciless terror group holds hostages consisting of a group of Indian and Pakistani nurses in Iraq, RAW contacts the exiled Tiger (Salman Khan) to organize a rescue operation. Tiger must form an alliance with a group of Pakistani ISI agents to fight the odds that are stacked against him, so that he can win. This film is unique in the India Pakistan spy films list since the film is all about co-operation instead of confrontation between the intelligence agencies of the two countries and has been shot through the prism of action sequences that can only be seen in Hollywood films.

    5. Baby

Baby, directed by Neeraj Pandey is a thriller that is fast moving and intense, and centers on a temporary, covert black-ops team formed by Indian intelligence to prevent terrorist attacks. The main protagonist of the film, Akshay Kumar, leads the team through the borders of the country, such as Nepal and the Middle East, to destroy a terror mastermind. Although the main antagonists are mainly located in Pakistan, the cross-border terrorism is closely related to the geopolitical themes of the movie. Baby is greatly appreciated through its no-nonsense realistic style of counter-terrorism without the use of unnecessary songs and romance to tell a crunchy, captivating story of the unrecognized players in national security.

    6. Phantom

Phantom is an action-thriller and stars Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif and is directed by Kabir Khan, adapted to a book of the same title by Hussain Zaidi, Mumbai Avengers. Its plot involves a fictitious situation in which a fallen former Indian army officer is hired by RAW to police an undercover assassination mission on the masterminds of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. The protagonist flies all over the world, and finally enters Pakistan to destroy the most important characters who caused the tragedy. Phantom is a revenge fantasy which discusses the what-if? of India deciding to directly and brutally strike across the border, with heavy action sequences and undercover espionage.

    7. Naam Shabana

A spin-off prequel of Baby, Naam Shabana is about the genesis of Shabana Khan portrayed brilliantly by Taapsee Pannu. The movie tells of how a middle-class tragic girl who is fierce is recruited and trained by the Indian intelligence agencies to be an elite covert agent. Her initial big overseas assignment is the pursuit of an elusive international arms dealer and the plot of the story interlaces international syndicates which are connected throughout the world, including Pakistan. It is a Bollywood spy film where the lead actress, as a woman, is an unusual female spy that portrays the pain and suffering she underwent in her marathon training, intelligence collections, and hand to hand combat to survive in the dark world of spies.

    8. Mission Majnu

Mission majnu is an Indian spy film, which stars Sidharth Malhotra as the lead male character who plays Amandeep Singh an under-cover agent of the RAW in Pakistan in the 1970s. He comes as a tailor in the town who comes to collect information on the secret nuclear weapons program of Pakistan disguised as a local tailor named Tariq. The movie depends greatly on aesthetics of old-school spying-ware wiretaps, lock-picking and hiding meetings, as opposed to the contemporary gadgets. It tries to create a patriotic thriller and tragic cross-border love story as the main character gets married to a local woman who is blind to keep his cover and finally he is called upon to decide between his work to his country and his family love.

    9. Romeo Akbar Walter (RAW)

Romeo Akbar Walter is a 2013 film that features John Abraham playing the role of a bank cashier who is called upon by RAW because of his special talent in disguise. He goes undercover deep into Pakistan as Akbar Malik who is to infiltrate the military establishment in an attempt to offer critical intelligence before the war is about to be waged. It is a slow-burn spy thriller that puts much emphasis on the mental tension of leading a two-life and the full time paranoia of being discovered and the unglamorous side of being an undercover spy in the land of the enemy.

    10. Pathaan

Being a part of the YRF Spy Universe, Pathaan also stars Shah Rukh Khan, an exiled RAW agent who is recalled to eliminate a rogue mercenary organization called an Outfit X. The movie has extensive cross-border dynamics, with Pathaan having to collaborate with Rubina (Deepika Padukone), an ex-isi agent. Collectively, they ought to prevent the release of a lethal biological weapon in India. Although the film is more a stylized action film with gravity-defying elements instead of being a realistic spy film, its sheer size and the multifaceted relationship between the Indian and Pakistani spies makes the movie a staple of the modern films on the Spying genre in Bollywood Pakistan based.

    Public reaction in Pakistan

The response of the people in Pakistan towards the movies is very polarized. On the one hand, most of these movies are severely criticized due to the historical inaccuracy, stereotyping and showing Pakistan in an unfavorable light. As a result, other films such as Phantom, Baby, and Raazi were officially prohibited to be screened by the Pakistani censor boards. But on the other hand, Pakistan has a huge fan base of Bollywood. These spy thrillers are being watched in great numbers on streaming sites, downloaded, and through pirated DVDs despite the prohibitions and this shows that the entertainment factor tends to override political lines when it comes to most movie goers.

Are These Movies Based on True Stories?

Most of the movies in the list of India Pakistan spy movies are grossly fictionalized to entertain but some of them have their roots in reality. Raazi is, probably, the most recognisable real Indian spy in a Pakistani film, next to the real story of a young Kashmiri woman. In the same manner, Romeo Akbar Walter and Mission Majnu are heavily inspired by actual intelligence missions, and the myth of RAW agent Ravindra Kaushik (also known as the Black Tiger). But franchise blockbusters such as Ek Tha Tiger, Pathaan and Phantom are pure commercial fiction.

    Most Realistic Indian Spy Film

Raazi and Baby are the best in terms of realism. Raazi captures horror, loneliness, and absence of glamorous action that is the main characteristic of a genuine undercover work. It demonstrates that the real spies are not blowing up cars, they are listening on the wall and memorizing papers. Baby, conversely, offers a very realistic depiction of the current state of counter-terrorism giving an insight into how the intelligence community employs surveillance, sleeper cells and targeted tactical extractions instead of man-to-man gunfights.

Box Office Performance of Spy Movies

The Indian cinema has the most profitable genre of spy movies. The Yash Raj Films (YRF) Spy Universe that has produced Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, War, and Pathaan has earned more than 150 million dollars in the world market. Pathaan is the only film that shattered many box office records, demonstrating that viewers are in need of high-adrenaline spy films. Even content-based, mid-budget movies such as Raazi were huge sleeper hits, as both realistic and stylized spy movies are certain money-mills.

Is Dhurandhar based on a true story?

While Dhurandhar feels highly authentic, it is largely a fictional thriller. However, like many movies in this genre, its plot, tactics, and the character of Jamal Jamali are heavily inspired by real-life covert operations and the geopolitical dynamics between India and Pakistan.

Where can I watch Dhurandhar movie in Pakistan?

Since Indian movies with strong geopolitical or intelligence themes are often not released in Pakistani cinemas, viewers usually have to rely on global OTT platforms (like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video) once the film secures a digital release, often using VPNs if regional restrictions apply.

Are Indian spy movies banned in Pakistan?

Yes, the Pakistani censor board frequently bans Indian spy movies—such as Baby, Phantom, and Tiger Zinda Hai—citing anti-Pakistan narratives and negative portrayals of their intelligence agencies.

Where can I watch these movies online in Pakistan?

Despite theatrical bans, most of these movies are easily accessible in Pakistan through streaming giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Zee5. Some older titles are also officially available on YouTube.

Who is Jamal Jamali in Pakistan?

In the context of the film Dhurandhar, Jamal Jamali is a fictional but highly dangerous antagonist. He is depicted as a mastermind operating a shadowy syndicate within Pakistan, serving as the primary target for the Indian undercover operative.
