Veteran PPP leader and former Sindh governor Kamaluddin Azfar passed away in Karachi on Monday. According to his family and party sources, he was under treatment at Ziauddin Hospital where he took his last breath.
PPP Sindh General Secretary Senator Waqar Mehdi confirmed the news by saying funeral arrangements will be made after Azfar’s children arrive from abroad.
Kamaluddin Azfar was a close companion of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and once served as PPP Karachi president. He was known as the Son of Karachi for his contributions to the city including building low-income housing in the Lines Area.
He was appointed Sindh Governor in 1995 by then PM Benazir Bhutto and had earlier served as a senator and Sindh finance minister.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah paid tribute to Kamaluddin Azfar by calling him a wise politician whose services would always be remembered. PPP Senator Sherry Rehman also expressed sorrow by remembering him as a committed activist and close advisor to Benazir Bhutto on local government matters.

Kamaluddin Azfar had a strong academic and legal background. He studied at Government College Lahore, Oxford University Balliol College and was called to the Bar at Inner Temple London. He returned to Karachi to start his law practice.
He was also a writer and economist and have worked as a research assistant to Nobel Prize-winning economist Gunnar Myrdal. His publications include:

- Sindh Minister for Finance, Planning and Development
- Federal Minister for Local Government and Rural Development
- Special Assistant to the Prime Minister
