It may sound unusual for Sony Pictures Animation to release a movie about K-pop stars fighting demons. But when you think about it , Spider-Verse movies and K-pop are two of the most loved and powerful pop culture trends of the last decade. So why not mix the two?
What is the Story of KPop Demon Hunters?
The movie follows a K-pop girl group called Huntrix that made up of three talented members:
- Rumi (voiced by Arden Cho) who is the strong and focused lead singer
- Mira (May Hong) who is the cool, mysterious dancer and choreographer
- Zoey (Jin-Young Yoo) who is the cheerful rapper and lyricist
But these girls are not just idols, they are also demon hunters. Their job? Protecting the world from soul-eating demons led by the evil king Gwi-Ma and voiced by Squid Game star Lee Byung-hun.
The movie soundtrack is a highlight. With songs performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami (as the singing voices of Huntrix), the songs are catchy, energetic and fit the story perfectly.
Things really heat up when Huntrix faces a new threat which is a demon boy band supervised by the charming but dangerous Jinu (voiced by Ahn Hyo-seop with vocals by Andrew Choi). Not only do the girls have to battle him and his team but they also must face their own personal struggles and fears. This emotional journey adds depth to all the fast paced fun.
This movie mixes different animation styles, colors and textures in a stunning way. You can see the influence of shows like Arcane and the animation team clearly put a lot of love into every frame.
KPop Demon Hunters is an impressive directorial debut by Maggie Kang and a major win for Sony Pictures Animation. It is fun, vibrant and fresh that combines the power of K-pop with superhero-level action.
