One of the most critical infrastructure developments in Pakistan can now be said to be over. According to an announcement of the Federal Minister of Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, the Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway (M-6) would start construction in May 2026.
In an address at a higher-level National Highway Authority (NHA) meeting, the minister announced that the project was a priority. In order to be efficient and sustainable, both Sukkur-Hyderabad and Karachi motorways will be constructed in a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) format.
The government has ordered officials to make sure that work goes on concurrently on all parts to keep deadlines met promptly. It is the last stretch of this motorway that would connect north and south of Pakistan, therefore, its completion is crucial to the national trade and logistics.
Sialkot-Kharian Motorway Upgrade
Besides the actual opening date of M-6 Motorway Project, the minister also announced a complete upgrade of the Sialkot-Kharian Motorway (M-12). Previously designed to be a four lane highway, it is now set to be developed to be a six lane motorway that will cater to the traffic demand in the next 30 years.
Another issue that was addressed during the meeting was the process of connecting the motorway system with the religious tourism destination Kartarpur and road shows will be conducted in Canada, the US and Europe to encourage investments and tourism.
