It is the start of the new era of digital connectivity in the country, and Pakistan has officially announced its much-awaited 5G spectrum auction. Key government figures attended the inauguration ceremony which preconditioned the acceleration of the internet and further technological incorporation in the country.
The bidding process was formally opened by the Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, the Minister of Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Attaullah Tarar and the Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
This is all you need to know about the auction, the telecom operators which are going to participate, and the approximate timeframe of 5G in Pakistan.
5G Spectrum Auction Details
Spectrum availability in the past has been a problem in Pakistan but effective coordination between the frequency allocation board and the PTA has enabled this feat to be achieved.
In this historic roll out, the PTA has provided some 600 megahertz (MHz) of spectrum to be bid upon. Three major telecom companies currently operating in Pakistan have successfully qualified for the process and submitted their bids.
According to PTA officials, the auction is highly structured:
- The process will be conducted in two stages.
- It will span across five rounds of bidding.
- The critical first round of bidding is set to run for 60 minutes.
Government Relief for Telecom Companies
To encourage telecom investment and speed up the necessary digital infrastructure development, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb announced a major policy shift. The government has officially abolished the “Right of Way” charges for fiber deployment. Previously costing telecom operators around Rs. 36,000 per kilometer, the removal of this fee will rapidly accelerate fiberization across the country.
