The Government of Pakistan is gearing up to introduce a new plan that makes it easy to own an electric bike. Under this initiative, 116,000 bikes will be made available to people on two-year installment plans—no big upfront cost. The scheme falls under the National Electric Vehicle Policy (2025–2030), and it’s expected that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will formally launch it on 14 August, in honor of Independence Day.

In collaboration with the Banking Association, the State Bank of Pakistan has developed this plan with a practical purpose — to make transportation cleaner and more affordable.

    Key Features of the Scheme:

    • Each e-bike and rickshaw will come with a Rs. 50,000 government subsidy.
    • The total cost of an electric bike may go up to Rs. 250,000, with the buyer paying the remaining amount (over Rs. 200,000) in affordable monthly installments.
    • Applicants must be between 18 and 65 years of age to qualify.

    Local Manufacturing and Adoption Goals:

    • 17 companies in Pakistan have received licenses to manufacture electric bikes locally.
    • The goal is to have 30% of all vehicles in Pakistan running on electricity by 2030.
    • The government plans to support this transition by offering a total subsidy of Rs. 100 billion over the next five years.

    Subsidy Breakdown by Year:

    • Rs. 9 billion for the current fiscal year (2025)
    • Rs. 19 billion in 2027
    • Rs. 24 billion in 2028
    • Rs. 26 billion in 2029
    • Rs. 23 billion already spent in 2023

    Sindh Government’s Special Initiative:

In a separate but related move, the Sindh Government has decided to offer free electric bikes to women, particularly those who travel for work. The Sindh Transport Department has proposed Rs. 300 million for this purpose and requested the funds be granted outside of the regular annual budget.
