The Punjab government is planning to reduce the summer holidays in all schools and colleges as one of the significant education reforms. A special committee constituted under the instructions of the Rawalpindi Bench of Lahore High Court has suggested a new academic calendar in the institutions throughout the province.
In this scheme, every school and college in Punjab will be obliged to put in 190 teaching days in a year in an effort to enhance the outcomes of learning.
Punjab Summer Vacations Reduction Proposal
Reduction of summer long summer vacation is one of the major aspects of the Punjab plan of reducing summer vacations. At present students receive approximately two and half months of vacation however, the committee has proposed a cut down to only six weeks.
The committee had one meeting every quarter of the last four months and completed the proposal on the third meeting.
Uniform Academic Calendar for Punjab
Based on the recommendations, it is suggested that:
- There will be 175 total holidays in the institutions.
- Instructional and teaching days will be maintained at 190days.
- Private school associations across Punjab have already supported the move.
After the proposal, Punjab School Education Department Special Secretary Muhammad Iqbal directed PECTA and the Director of Public Instruction to prepare a uniform academic calendar within three days.
Why Punjab Wants to Reduce Vacations
Officials believe that too many holidays hurt student performance. The committee noted that in senior classes, syllabi often remain incomplete because of repeated breaks.
The Punjab summer vacations reduction aims to ensure students get enough classroom time and better academic consistency throughout the year.
Court’s Role in Punjab Summer Vacations Reduction
The committee was constituted by Justice Jawad Hassan when he was hearing a petition in the Lahore High Court Rawalpindi Bench. The petition disputed the rising holidays in schools and colleges in Punjab.
The committee’s final meeting was held in Lahore under the supervision of Special Secretary Muhammad Iqbal, where the recommendations were approved.
