TheEmpower Project of Punjab Transport Company has come up with a new initiative. They will put up tuck shops at various public bus stops in the province which would be run by deserving women.
The Company recently put out a progress report for its Empower Project, which is currently being implemented through the Akhuwat Foundation. In its latest report, PC told how this new initiative is helping women to earn a livelihood and upgrade everyday urban facilities.
A Project Built in Three Successful Phases
The tuck shop initiative is not a sudden project. The authorities have been introducing it in phases, all in the past couple of months and three different phases, to ensure the smooth operationalization of it.
The first phase of the project commenced around end-2025 when construction of 10 tuck shops was undertaken and completed successfully, rendering the tuck shop operational.
After a successful implementation of Phase One, Phase Two was carried out two months ago and 11 more shops were handed over successfully.
The completion and handover of the remaining 11 shops was successful and was completed a few days ago.
The third and final phase has been completed and all (32) truck shops are operational at different congested bus-stops in different areas of the city now.
Upgrading Public Facilities for Commuters
While the primary goal of the Empower Project is to provide business opportunities for women, regular commuters are also reaping the benefits.
The authorities didn’t just build the shops and walk away. To make these transit points more modern and secure, they have installed free Wi-Fi services at the bus stops where the tuck shops are located. Furthermore, security cameras have been set up around the shops to ensure a safer environment for both the female business owners and the daily passengers waiting for their buses.
