In Pakistan, quinoa is commonly known as “کینوا” (Kinwa / Quinoa). It does not have a traditional Urdu or regional name because quinoa is not a native grain of South Asia. Instead, it is recognized by its English name, which is simply written and pronounced in Urdu as کینوا.

In local markets and grocery stores, quinoa is usually sold as:

    Quinoa / کینوا

    Organic Quinoa

    Imported Quinoa

Some shopkeepers may loosely describe it as “ایک خاص قسم کا دانہ” (a special type of grain), but nutritionally, quinoa is actually a seed, not a true grain.

Quinoa in Pakistan: An Informative Overview

Quinoa is a highly nutritious food that has gained popularity in Pakistan over the last decade, especially among people who are health-conscious, diabetic, or following weight-loss diets. Originally grown in the Andes region of South America, quinoa is now imported into Pakistan and is available in major cities such as Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, and Faisalabad.

One of the main reasons quinoa is gaining attention in Pakistan is its high protein content. Unlike rice or wheat, quinoa contains all nine essential amino acids, making it a complete protein. This makes it especially beneficial for vegetarians, fitness enthusiasts, and patients recovering from illness.

Another important reason for its growing use is that quinoa is naturally gluten-free, which makes it suitable for people suffering from gluten intolerance or celiac disease. In Pakistan, where wheat is a staple food, quinoa is often used as a healthier alternative in salads, pulao, and breakfast dishes.

Quinoa is also rich in fiber, iron, magnesium, zinc, and antioxidants, which help improve digestion, control blood sugar levels, and support heart health. Because of these benefits, nutritionists in Pakistan often recommend quinoa for patients with diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular problems.

Although quinoa is still considered a premium or imported food item in Pakistan and is more expensive than rice or wheat, its demand is steadily increasing. Many health food stores and online platforms now sell white, red, and black quinoa, with white quinoa being the most commonly used variety in Pakistani households.

In everyday Pakistani usage, people usually pronounce it as “کینوا” or sometimes “کوئنوآ”, but both refer to the same superfood. As awareness about healthy eating grows, quinoa is slowly finding its place in Pakistani kitchens as a nutritious addition rather than a replacement for traditional grains.
