When you’re aiming to study abroad, apply for a job overseas, or even settle in another country, there’s usually one box you have to tick — proving you can communicate well in English. For most people here in Pakistan, that ends up being the IELTS test.
Now, here’s where the confusion kicks in. Which website do you book on? What paperwork do you need? When exactly do you pay the fee? I can’t tell you how many students I’ve seen hit a wall right here. You start looking for answers and end up lost between half-baked tips and a dozen different websites. That’s why I decided to put everything in one place — the whole IELTS registration process, step by step, in a way that’s easy to follow and won’t make your head spin.
First, Figure Out Which IELTS You Need
Not all IELTS tests are the same. Before you jump into booking, check which one your university, employer, or visa office wants:
Test Type | Who Usually Needs It |
IELTS Academic | Students applying for undergraduate or postgraduate studies |
IELTS General | People applying for work permits or immigration |
IELTS UKVI | Applicants for UK visas where the test must be UKVI approved |
Pick How You’ll Take the Test
In Pakistan, you have only one format to choose from:
Computer-based – You type answers on a computer at the centre. Speaking is still in person.
Choose Your Test Provider for IELTS
You can register for IELTS in Pakistan through either:
- British Council Pakistan – Centres in major cities like Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Multan, Faisalabad, Peshawar.
Website: www.britishcouncil.pk/exam/ielts - AEO Pakistan – Offices in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, and some other cities.
Website: www.aeo.com.pk
Pick whichever is closer to you and offer your preferred date.
Create an Account and Book Your Slot for IELTS
Once you’ve chosen your provider:
- Visit their website
- Create an online account (you’ll need your CNIC or passport details)
- Upload a scanned copy of your passport (most universities abroad prefer passport details)
- Select your city and test date
Pay the Fee for IELTS
As of 2025, IELTS fees in Pakistan are roughly:
Test Type | Fee Range (PKR) |
IELTS Academic/General | 60,000- 68,000 |
IELTS UKVI | 63,000 – 68,000 |
Payment methods:
- Debit/Credit card online
- Bank deposit at designated branches (provider will give slip details)
Check Your Email for Confirmation
After payment is processed, you’ll receive:
- Test date and time
- Centre location
- Instructions for test day
Keep this email safe — you’ll need it.
Prepare and Show Up on Time
- Bring your original CNIC or passport (same ID you used to register)
- Arrive at least 30 minutes early
- Follow instructions for each section
- Relax — being calm helps you focus better
