The Sindh government has formally introduced the Workers’ Welfare Card, a new initiative designed to improve social protection and financial support for industrial laborers in the province.
According to Sindh Secretary Labour, Rafiq Qureshi, this program will provide a wide range of benefits to registered workers. The most significant feature is accident health insurance worth up to Rs. 700,000, available across more than 270 hospitals nationwide. Sindh is the first province in Pakistan to launch such a large-scale health insurance plan for workers.
In addition to health coverage, the initiative also includes the distribution of 10,000 e-motorcycles. These will primarily be given to women working in industries as well as minority workers, enabling easier and more affordable transportation. To further empower women, sewing machines will also be distributed so that female workers can generate income from home and improve their financial independence.
The Workers’ Welfare Card is designed to provide direct and simplified access to welfare schemes. With this card, workers will be able to avail facilities such as marriage grants, death grants, and other financial support programs without the need to stand in long queues.
While announcing the scheme, Qureshi emphasized the importance of laborers, calling them the backbone of Pakistan’s economy. He made it clear that the exploitation of workers would not be tolerated. Industries that fail to register their employees under the welfare system will face strict action from the government.
The secretary further advised workers to understand their rights and ensure proper registration so that they can fully benefit from this program. He described the scheme as a “new and brighter chapter” in the welfare of Sindh’s labor community.
