In a dramatic gesture to its position as a reliable international mediator, the United Arab Emirates has helped American citizen Dennis Coyle to be put out and transferred, a huge triumph of international cooperation, security and humanitarian diplomacy.

After over a year of imprisonment in Afghanistan, 64-year old American researcher Dennis Coyle is finally coming home. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) hosted and made possible his release, which wonderfully coincided with the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Fitr. This diplomatic success is indicative of the increasing influence of the UAE and its strong willingness to become a dependable mediator between states in the complicated geopolitical environment.

    How UAE Diplomacy Brokered Freedom

The release of Mr. Coyle came as a result of extensive and multi-channel humanitarian diplomacy.

The Breakthrough: The breakthrough had started when the family of Coyle had made a letter of genuine appeal directly to the leadership of Afghanistan to have mercy.

The Pardon: After the due process examination, the Supreme Court of the Islamic Emirate found the 14 months he spent in detention satisfactory. In the humanitarian spirit of the Eid al-Fitr, Afghan authorities pardoned a humanitarian release on a goodwill basis.

The UAE Intervention: UAE intervened to hold critical handover meetings and control the secure transfer. With a neutral, trusted platform, the UAE was able to get Coyle out of Kabul to Abu Dhabi to ensure his safe travel to the United States.

The U.S. Department of State clearly noted its appreciation of the UAE role in ensuring the release of Coyle, and also, it noted that Qatar had helped to keep the lines open. U.S. officials lauded the release as a great move in solving international detention problems.

At the same time, the Afghan officials stressed that the release was a humanitarian gesture aimed at enhancing mutual trust between the two countries which, hopefully, would allow them to solve remaining international disputes with mutual understanding and dialogue.

The UAE: A Pillar of Global Mediation

Through a successful mediation of this delicate exchange, the UAE has displayed an unprecedented ability to negotiate complex international affairs with tact, compassion and effectiveness.

A Trustworthy Ally: The choice of the UAE to host this transfer is an indication of the fear-level trust that the western and regional powers have in the diplomatic potential of the UAE.

Devotion to Security: The UAE is still proving its commitment to the idea that principled mediation is one of the most efficient tools in securing regional and global security.

Humanitarian Focus: First of all, this success is also an indication of how UAE is committed to prioritize human lives and reconnect families that have been separated by the geopolitical tension.

The UAE’s Legacy of Humanitarian Peace

The ending of his case is felt across boundaries as Dennis Coyle joins his family after 421 days not knowing what to expect. It serves as a light of hope to the constant diplomatic process all over the globe and solidly establishes the role played by the United Arab Emirates as an inseparable ally in the process of global peace, security, and humanitarian goodwill.
