The Government of Pakistan announced on Saturday that it plans to formally recommend former US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. This decision comes in recognition of the key diplomatic role of Trump during the recent India-Pakistan crisis.
In an official post shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the government stated that the international community witnessed unprovoked Indian aggression which violated Pakistan’s sovereignty and caused the tragic deaths of civilians including women and children. Pakistan in response launched Operation Bunyan al Marsoos which was a calculated and measured military operation meant to defend its territory while avoiding civilian harm.
The government stated that Trump played a critical role by engaging diplomatically with both Islamabad and New Delhi at a time when the situation was rapidly worsening.. According to the post, Trump’s involvement showed strategic foresight and statesmanship and served as a major step toward peace in the region.
Pakistan also acknowledged past offers of Trump to mediate the Kashmir issue by stating that lasting peace in South Asia will remain out of reach until the United Nations Security Council resolutions on Kashmir are implemented. The government praised Trump’s diplomatic efforts not only in South Asia but also in other global crises such as the conflict in Gaza and tensions with Iran.
Donald Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social in response and expressed frustration about not being recognized for his peacemaking efforts. He claimed that he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize for helping stop conflicts in India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo and maintaining peace in places like Egypt and Ethiopia. Trump who has often spoken about his desire for the Nobel Peace Prize once again criticized the committee for giving the award to former President Barack Obama in 2009 by arguing that Obama had not earned it.
While Pakistan is within its rights to nominate someone for the Nobel Peace Prize, it remains to be seen how this move will be received internationally. There has been no response from the US government as of now and India has also not commented on the development.
