The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a special advisory alerting consumers across the country to an important security update for their phones. The regulator says that soon, any WhatsApp account on an inactive, blocked or legally unverified SIM card will have to suffer serious restrictions of access. The stringent step is taken to protect digital identities and to reduce the likelihood of identity theft and the increasing number of financial cybercrimes in the country.

This detailed policy change explanation discusses the reasons behind this change and how you can immediately check whether your cell phone is registered or unregistered, and what action you need to take right away to keep your important chats, groups and contacts safe.

The New PTA Mandate on SIM Verification and WhatsApp

In its official public service announcement, the telecom regulator emphasized the core message: “Your digital identity is your responsibility.” A substantial number of mobile phone users in Pakistan currently operate WhatsApp accounts on numbers that have either been long deactivated by telecom operators or remain registered under someone else’s Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC).

The PTA notes that running instant messaging accounts on unverified numbers presents a massive security loophole. If a disconnected number is eventually reallocated by a cellular operator to a new buyer, that new user could potentially gain access to the previous owner’s private WhatsApp data and active chat groups. To eliminate this vulnerability, it is now mandatory that the mobile number powering your WhatsApp is active, functional, and fully backed by your biometric verification.

Which WhatsApp Accounts are at Risk?

If your WhatsApp account has any of the following characteristics, you will most likely experience a WhatsApp disruption suddenly.

Deactivated SIMs: WhatsApp account is associated with a lost, damaged or registered SIM card.

Wi-Fi Only Usage: You use the app without a balance, but the SIM card was cancelled because of the long period of time without balance recharge on the network.

Unregistered Ownership: The mobile connection is owned by a third party, by a deceased family member or an unknown person and you have no valid biometric proof of ownership.

How to Check Your SIM Verification Status Immediately

The government has two quick and easy methods to check how many SIM cards are registered in your name legally in Pakistan:

By SMS: Dial the messaging app of your mobile and enter your CNIC number without spaces or dashes in the message box and then send it to 668. You’ll get an auto-text with details about the active sims you have on Jazz, Telenor, Zong and Ufone.

Online Portal: If you need to check the credential information directly online, you can securely enter the credential information on the official PTA SIM Information System.

Immediate Actions to Secure Your WhatsApp Account

If your existing WhatsApp number is connected to a SIM with low verification status or a risky SIM, take these preventive measures as soon as you find out:

Complete Biometric Verification: Visit nearest customer relationship centre, official franchise and authorized agent of your respective mobile network (Jazz, Zong, Telenor or Ufone) with your original CNIC and register or transfer the mobile number to your name.

Use the Change Number feature: You must use the Change Number feature, which is available in your WhatsApp app, to change your number if the old one is lost. Follow the prompts to automatically transfer your profile, groups and media history to a new verified and active SIM number.

Terminate Unused Lines: Formally request your mobile operator to deactivate any stray SIM cards registered under your CNIC that are no longer in your physical possession.

A Warning Against Phishing and Verification Scams

The regulator specifically cautions people to be aware of scams by phone, SMS and/or the links being sent. The scammers often claim to be working for the PTA as “PTA Verification Officers” and tell the people that their mobile lines will be blocked if they don’t share a code or One Time Password (OTP).

Official authorities will never ask for temporary passwords, financial information or personal pins over the phone. For authentic inquiries, guidance, or to register a cyber fraud complaint, you should visit the verified PTA Complaint Management System. Take proactive ownership of your mobile connections today to keep your personal data fully secure.
