New Provinces in Pakistan: Rana Sanaullah Says No Cabinet Talks Have Taken Place

The issue of new provinces in Pakistan is in the news again and once again it is generating more heat than light. Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah has said outright that there is no such plan on the table at the federal level at this time. For ordinary citizens tired of rumors on social media, his statement is worth understanding properly.

What Did Rana Sanaullah Actually Say

In an interview with Geo News, Sanaullah said the establishment had not approached the government with any proposal on new provinces and the federal cabinet had not taken up the matter formally. The idea has just ‘not gotten public acceptance’ yet, he said. That makes a big difference. It’s not like the government is secretly working on new provinces behind closed doors. Sanaullah said the matter had not even reached the stage of internal discussion.

    Why the Discussion Keeps Returning

This is not a new argument in Pakistani politics. There have been demands for a separate South Punjab province over the years and sometimes for separate administrative units for Hazara and Karachi. Supporters of the proposals argue that smaller provinces will mean better governance and faster development for underserved regions. Critics are concerned about the cost, the political tensions and the possibility of deepening ethnic or regional divisions.

The constitutional reality no one can bypass

Whatever the political mood, it’s not something that one government can decide alone, creating a new province. It requires a constitutional amendment, which needs a two-thirds majority in the parliament. That’s a high bar in the current political climate in Pakistan, where coalition governments and shifting alliances make such consensus difficult to build.

What it means for the average Pakistani

Nothing will be happening for the moment, no change in provincial boundaries, no new administrative setup, and no new taxation or governance structure to be expected. Here is a brief checklist to remember:

•There has been no cabinet-level discussion on new provinces.

•The establishment has not taken up the matter with the government.

•Any real change would have to be made in the constitution.

•You need a two-thirds majority in parliament and that is not available at the moment.

•Opinion is still divided on the proposal.

    Conclusion

The debate about new provinces in Pakistan will continue in the talk shows and drawing rooms but Rana Sanaullah’s statement has made the government’s position clear for the time being: nothing is official. Citizens should be cautious of viral claims on province splits until a real constitutional process is launched. For now, the safest way is simple: be informed by credible news sources, and don’t believe every rumor that circulates on WhatsApp groups.
