Pakistan Seeks Strategic Economic Partnership With Saudi Arabia as High-Level Delegation Meets PM Shehbaz Sharif

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia inch closer on trade and investment. A high-level Saudi business delegation met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the PM House in Islamabad this week. The two sides discussed turning decades of friendship into a working economic partnership that actually delivers projects, not just promises.

Why this meeting is important for Pakistan

For most families here, Saudi Arabia is not just a diplomatic partner. It is home to a huge population of Pakistani workers making a living and sending money home. Saudi Arabia is already the world’s top remittances source and last month Riyadh renewed five billion dollars of deposits with Pakistan for another three years. A stronger economic partnership could mean more jobs and more sustained support for the rupee.

    What The Delegation Talked About

Prince Mansour bin Mohammad Al Saud, Chairman of the Saudi-Pak Joint Business Council, led the delegation. Saudi investors were interested in a number of sectors:

    •Projects on agriculture and farmland.

•Outsourcing of airports, highways and ports.

    •Development of real estate.

    •Power and energy distribution.

    •Information technology (IT).

“This is the right time for government-level and business-to-business cooperation between the two countries,” PM Sharif told the delegation.

What does it mean for the average Pakistani?

Big investment conversations may seem removed from the day-to-day, but they do tend to filter down. Saudi money invested in ports, power plants or IT parks could create local jobs, improve infrastructure and open up new business opportunities for small firms working with foreign partners.

    Readers’ Quick Checklist

•Look for announcements of new energy or IT investment.

•Check the Saudi-Pak Joint Business Council for updates.

•Find job opportunities related to Gulf-funded projects.

    Conclusion

The visit represents another step in Pakistan’s push for Gulf investment at a time when its economy is desperate for it. It still has to be turned into real projects by both governments, but the direction is heartening for jobs and growth. Keep an eye on official statements before you make any money decisions on this news.
