In a major milestone for national financial infrastructure, fiscal digitization and fintech adoption curves the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has reported that digital channels accounted for 92 percent of total retail payment transactions during fiscal year 2025-26. Published within the SBP’s latest Annual Payment Systems Review the massive structural transition realigns conventional cash heavy frameworks into a system vetted high velocity digital economy sandbox.
The overall volume of digital payments surged by 65 percent year-on-year to hit 13.2 billion transactions. In absolute terms formal banking architectures ingested 14.3 billion retail payment transactions valued at a staggering Rs. 673 trillion representing a 58 percent expansion in transaction throughput and a 10 percent appreciation in total transaction value over the prior fiscal year.

Mobile banking spearheaded this rapid transformation processing over 11.1 billion transactions. Concurrently, online e-commerce transactions became almost entirely account based making up 96 percent of digital marketplace checkouts. To optimize background transaction safety lines the central bank integrated the PRISM+ real-time gross settlement system with the international ISO 20022 standard in August 2025. Shifting from legacy manual settlement scripts to automated ISO vetted channels completely eliminates system level transaction vulnerabilities. Through these modernized payment structures Pakistan significantly drives down liquidity friction indices while successfully safeguarding sovereign public digital trust.
