In a major development for international aviation infrastructure, passenger safety protocols and commercial airline risk monitoring an IndiGo Airbus A321 executing a domestic transit route made an emergency landing due to an IndiGo mid air power bank fire. A thick smoke came out of a passenger’s personal electronic device inside an overhead storage enclosure and forced the aircraft to divert to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) Hyderabad on 6E6115 from Delhi to Chennai on 11 October 2026.
The lithium-ion thermal runaway occurred during a flight with 180 passengers and seven crew members on board. The cabin crew responded quickly to the fire by operating fire extinguishers to extinguish the blaze at the spot the video feeds of the passengers by the viruses showed as the passengers were trying to put out the fire by using their own cabin bags. The aircraft landed safely at 3:59 PM and the carrier had an alternate plane ready to move the stranded passengers to their destination with no reports of injuries.
| Flight Telemetry Vector | Vetted Departure / Arrival Node | Systemic Safety Status |
| Flight 6E6115 Runway Takeoff | Indira Gandhi Airport (1:30 PM) | Departed Terminal 1 smoothly. |
| Overhead Compartment Fire | Mid-air thermal runaway event | Swiftly contained by crew via extinguisher kits. |
| Emergency Diversion Hub | Rajiv Gandhi Airport (3:59 PM) | Safe landing executed under strict safety protocols. |
Aviation officials say the airline’s baggage policy has a strict ban on putting the power bank or spare lithium batteries in the overhead compartments or checked bags they need to be within easy reach below seats or on the body. The movement of electronic hazards to unmonitored areas generates significant operational risks and is a stark reminder of the critical importance of adherence to international dangerous goods tracking regulations to ensure passenger safety worldwide.
