US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that Washington’s evolving bilateral relationship with Pakistan is designed to grant the United States greater leverage and US Pakistan influence over Islamabad’s domestic and foreign policy decisions.
The remarks were delivered during a joint media interview with India Today recorded at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai alongside the US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor. Responding to queries regarding how Washington intends to assure New Delhi that closer ties with Islamabad would not compromise India’s counter-terrorism operations, Rubio emphasized that the American partnership with Pakistan is historical rather than recent. He explained that the relationship has matured to intentionally enhance American oversight regarding a variety of regional topics though he explicitly clarified that these developments do not come at the expense of US-India relations.
Furthermore, Rubio highlighted Washington’s active backchannel diplomacy during last year’s military escalation between India and Pakistan. He noted that the US successfully leveraged its long standing connection with New Delhi and its recently improved ties with Islamabad to de-escalate frontline friction before it could expand into a full scale regional conflict. The strategic commentary comes amid a notable increase in diplomatic engagement between Islamabad and Washington which recently expanded to include formal investment dialogues concerning Pakistan’s emerging artificial intelligence sector.
