The Murree Winter Safety Plan has been officially finalized and activated by the local district administration, along with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Rescue 1122. The thorough disaster management measures, called Mission Safe Winter, were activated right after the first snowfall of the season in the adjoining Galiyat region. The aim of the structural safety strategy is to ensure the safety of visitors to the family, mobility of traffic and avoid emergency traffic jams during this peak winter tourism season (December 15 to February 15).
Emergency Infrastructure and Surveillance Networks
In order to give immediate relief and guidance to the tourists, 19 tourist facilitation centers have already been established along major transit routes of Rawalpindi, KP and Azad Kashmir. The administration has also been using high technology equipment to ensure a 24 hours surveillance of the vulnerable entry points of the hill station. The network comprises 181 high-tech Safe City cameras and specialised thermal drones that will keep a real-time check on the road condition, while the dedicated Pakistan Army contingent will keep a watch on the area for constant security surveillance.
Regulatory Controls and Road Maintenance
The macro safety plan imposes tough consumer protection legislation and logistical controls to guarantee a seamless visitor experience:
Anti-Profiteering Checks: The Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority (PERA) has decided to carry out an audit on hotels and petrol stations to effectively curb overcharging, price-gouging and tariff violations.
Medical Readiness: The Health Department has ordered the 24-hour presence of specialist medical doctors and emergency pharmaceutical supplies in all the regional hospitals.
Heavy Machinery Deployment: Over 20 modern snow clearing vehicles, industrial cranes and heavy loaders were pre-positioned at high risk choking locations to ensure that asphalt surfaces remain clear.
Moreover, new Rescue 1122 stations are fully operational throughout the district. The government has also suggested the construction of a special landing strip for the air ambulance service on the Murree Expressway to enable quick evacuation of the air ambulance in emergencies.
