The Government College Lahore Name Change has been officially set in motion following a landmark legislative directive by the provincial administration, marking a symbolic return to a prestigious academic legacy that spans over 160 years. Under the newly enacted Public Sector Universities (Amendment) Act 2026, the Punjab Higher Education Department has issued an executive notification ordering six prominent public-sector higher education institutions across the province to completely drop the word “University” from their official corporate nomenclature.
De-Elevating Titles While Preserving Academic Mandates
The sweeping policy decision is formally communicated to vice-chancellors and institutional rectors and is of particular importance for the historic capital institution. The top establishment opened its doors on January 1, 1864, when there were only nine students, but served as a college for more than a century until it was raised to universities in 2002. In this new structural adjustment, the university will give up the modern university name and will now completely adopt its traditional name Government College Lahore.

There are five other premium provincial academies that are subject to the statutory name change:
Faisalabad Region: Government College Faisalabad and the Government College for Women Faisalabad.
Sialkot Region: Government College for Women Sialkot.
Bahawalpur Region: Government Sadiq College Bahawalpur.
Lahore Region: Lahore College for Women.

The Higher Education Department’s notification has called upon the institutional heads to make the necessary changes as per the provision of the amendment act within a short period but has not fixed a specific operation completion date for the changes.
