The federal cabinet of Pakistan has approved the promotion of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir to the prestigious rank of Field Marshal. This honor was awarded in recognition of his exceptional leadership during the recent conflict with India known as Marka-i-Haq and the successful military operation Bunyanum Marsoos. General Asim Munir is now the second officer in Pakistan history to receive this rank after General Ayub Khan.
According to the Prime Minister Office (PMO), General Munir supervised the Pakistan Army with courage, determination and a well planned strategy. The cabinet statement stated that during the crisis General Munir coordinated the war strategy of all armed forces in a unified and effective manner.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif who chaired the cabinet meeting also consulted President Asif Ali Zardari before the final approval. In addition to General Asim Munir promotion, the government decided to extend the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu. Furthermore several army officers, soldiers, war veterans and civilians who played key roles during the operation will be honored with high level national awards.
General Asim Munir expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him by the government and the nation in his response. He dedicated this honor to the people of Pakistan, the armed forces and especially to the martyrs and veterans who have sacrificed for the country. He said this rank is not just a personal achievement but a tribute to the entire nation and its defenders.
