If you’re based in Karachi, Hyderabad or elsewhere across the Sindh province, you may have questions about work or school for the next week. Well, you can officially set your alarms straight because yes, April 4th in the year 2026 is a confirmed public holiday all over Sindh. The provincial government on March 30 cleared up all the confusion when it formally announced it through a notification from Karachi. Here’s a brief overview of why the holiday is taking place, which offices will close for the day and what will stay open.

Why Do We Observe a Holiday on April 4 in Sindh?

April 4th is observed by the provincial government every year as the death anniversary of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan and founder of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). This year is officially the 47th anniversary of his martyrdom. Bhutto was executed on April 4, 1979 and the Sindh government has traditionally paid homage to his legacy and deep political roots in the province by instituting a province-wide day of mourning.

What Will Be Closed on April 4th?

The official notification from the Services, General Administration and Coordination Department is fairly unambiguous about who cuts a day off. And if you work in the public sector, you are likely staying home. Following institutions operated by the Sindh provincial government will be fully closed on April 4:

    • All regular government offices
    • Autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies
    • Government-run corporations
    • Local city and district councils

No. The April 4 public holiday is exclusively observed in the Sindh province. Other provinces, such as Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan, will continue with their normal working schedules.

Why is there a holiday on April 4 in Sindh?

The Government of Sindh declares April 4 a public holiday every year to commemorate the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was executed on this date in 1979.

Will banks and schools be closed on April 4 in Sindh?

All government-run schools and educational institutions under the provincial government will be closed. As for banks, they usually follow the directives of the State Bank of Pakistan, but provincial government offices, local councils, and public corporations will definitely remain closed.

Are hospitals open on April 4?

Yes. Hospitals, clinics, emergency response teams, and police departments fall under the “essential services” category and will remain fully operational throughout the holiday.
