Asim Iftikhar Ahmed Likely to Become Pakistan’s New Foreign Secretary: What This Diplomatic Shift Mea

Islamabad’s diplomatic circles are talking about one thing this week. According to reports, the federal government is likely to appoint seasoned diplomat Asim Iftikhar Ahmed as a new foreign secretary of Pakistan. Now, a change at the top of the Foreign Office might not sound exciting to the average reader, but it quietly shapes how Pakistan speaks to the world, negotiates trade, and manages ties with its neighbours.

Why Asim Iftikhar Ahmed’s Appointment Is in the News

Sources say the high-level consultation over this appointment is already done, and Ahmed has come out as the consensus choice. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to make the announcement official before he heads to New York for the United Nations General Assembly session.

The timing says a lot. Pakistan wants someone experienced running the Foreign Office right when the country is making its case in front of the world.

    Who Is Asim Iftikhar Ahmed

He’s far from a fresh face in Pakistani diplomacy. Ahmed currently serves as Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations in New York and carries over three decades of experience in both bilateral and multilateral diplomacy, having worked across Europe, Africa, Asia, and at the UN itself.

Here’s a quick look at how his career has unfolded:

    • Born in Lahore in November 1966, he joined the Foreign Service back in 1993
    • Went on to serve as Ambassador to Thailand, then later Ambassador to France and Monaco
    • Took on the role of Foreign Ministry spokesperson and later headed the UN and Economic Diplomacy Division
    • Represented Pakistan on the Security Council team and served as Political Coordinator during 2012-2013
    • Graduated with gold medals from both UET Lahore and Punjab University

What Happens to the Outgoing Foreign Secretary

This whole development is unfolding because current Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch is set to complete her tenure by the third week of this month. Once she moves on, Ahmed is expected to step in and take over Pakistan’s diplomatic affairs, continuing what’s become a fairly consistent pattern of career diplomats holding this office.

Why This Matters for Common Pakistanis

It’s easy to think this kind of news doesn’t touch everyday life, but it does. The Foreign Secretary’s office plays into how overseas Pakistanis are treated abroad, how trade deals get shaped, visa matters, and Pakistan’s stance on regional issues like Kashmir and Afghanistan. A handover backed by this much experience usually means fewer bumps along the way.

    Conclusion

Whether or not the announcement comes exactly as expected, Asim Iftikhar Ahmed stepping into this role signals that Pakistan is leaning on experience during a sensitive diplomatic stretch. With the UN General Assembly session just around the corner, this is one change worth keeping an eye on.
