Pakistan has made an official introduction of the Pakistani National Medical Tourism Initiative in a strategic move to revive its healthcare economy. The program, which is organized under the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), is intended to turn the country into a regional medical destination that provides high-quality and affordable medical care.
This initiative isn’t just about healthcare; it’s a calculated effort to blend surgical expertise with economic diplomacy, inviting the world to experience Pakistan’s evolving medical landscape.
PAPS 30th Annual Conference
It was officially announced at the 30th year conference of the Association of Plastic Surgeons in Pakistan (PAPS) at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). Nevertheless, the event was able to attract more than 400 delegates with world-renowned expertise such as Eva Maria and Nick Wilson John among others, despite the regional complexities.
The conference under the chairmanship of Abdul Khaliq Malik was an exhibition of:
High-tech Aesthetics: New Botox and filler treatments.
Reconstructive Excellence: Multidimensional surgical procedures that are internationally excellent.
Live Workshops: Live demonstrations of state of the art surgical accuracy.
Telemedicine: The Digital Backbone
On the flip side to the physical infrastructure of medical tourism, the government is overinvesting in digital health. Recently, there was a review of the growth of Sehat Kahani, one of the most popular telemedicine platforms by Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal.
The government has made major milestones in terms of accessibility and cost-reduction through the introduction of telemedicine in eight facilities in Islamabad and Karachi.
Economic Impact: The telemedicine project has already saved about Rs. 8 million through getting rid of unnecessary travel expenses to patients.

Strategic Objectives of Pakistan National Medical Tourism Initiative
The initiative is anchored on three key pillars according to the Health Secretary Aslam Ghauri and the SIFC Director General Asadur Rehman Cheema:
Cost-Effectiveness: Providing surgical and medical services at a fraction of the price offered in the Western or Middle Eastern markets.
Quality Assurance: Adjusting the local hospitals to international accreditation in order to create confidence among foreign patients.
Investment Facilitation: FDI in Specialty Hospitals and medical equipment as an attractor with the help of the SIFC framework.
The Road Ahead
Pakistan National Medical Tourism Initiative is a move towards a human centric growth in the economy. Through specialization in niche markets such as plastic surgery and reconstructive surgeries, where the Pakistani surgeons already have a good global reputation, the government is hoping that they would have a sustainable source of foreign exchange and at the same time improve the local healthcare system to benefit the local population.
